The University of Basque Country welcomes 2 PhD students from Université de Brest (UBO) for the Course: CFD basic applied to floating bodies and experimental validation

May 19, 2026

The Bilbao School of Engineering (EHU) welcomed two PhD students from the Université de Brest (UBO) to Bilbao where they took a specialised course on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) basics applied to floating bodies and experimental validation. This initiative of the Blueskilling Innovation Project promotes collaboration and advanced training between the two institutions.

The first part “CFD simulation”, focused on the fluid dynamic processes applied to floating bodies using a CFD code. Combining waves simulation to dynamic fluid body interaction, as well as propulsion modeling. This kind of modeling leads to improve floating devices stability, energy efficiency and to support the development of innovative technologies.

As a second component of the course, “Experimental measurements in the wave flume”, they focused on hands-on testing of wave interactions with scaled models using the Bilbao School of Engineering’s wave flume facilities.

Throughout this programme, participants explored both CFD simulations and experimental testing in wave flume facilities, combining numerical modelling with practical validation.

This integrated approach aims to strengthen key skills and support innovation in marine engineering and blue economy.
